The United States is imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland. This was announced on January 17 by the American President Donald Trump.

Starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.

"Starting on February 1, 2026, all of the aforementioned countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland) will be charged a 10% tariff on any goods shipped to the United States of America. On June 1, 2026, the tariff will be increased to 25%. This tariff will be payable until a deal is reached on the full and final purchase of Greenland," he wrote on his Truth Social network.

Trump explained the decision by saying that China and Russia allegedly claim the island, while Denmark is unable to defend it. In his opinion, only the United States can ensure the security of the region.
