A solemn event was held at the Rossiya National Center to open the year of celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Union of Theatrical Figures of Russia. The date was chosen for a reason: on January 17, the country celebrates for the first time a new professional holiday — Artist's Day. Sergey Kiriyenko, First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, and Tatyana Golikova, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, presented state awards to cultural figures. Vladimir Mashkov, Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, spoke about 2,000 festive events that will be held throughout the country during the year.

The artist's First Day

Artist's Day became a public holiday thanks to the efforts of the Chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Vladimir Mashkov. A year ago, at the congress of the professional community, the People's Artist of Russia proposed that January 17, the birthday of the great reformer of the Russian theater Konstantin Stanislavsky, be considered a solemn date. The initiative was supported by the president, and a new professional holiday was established by the government's decision in 2025.

It unites theatrical figures, film and circus performers, composers, musicians, artists, and pop performers – all representatives of creative professions whose activities are aimed at preserving and enhancing Russia's cultural heritage. In a solemn atmosphere on the first Day of the artist, outstanding figures were awarded with high state awards. By presidential decree, Maxim Averin, Anna Mikhalkova, and Alexander Oleshko were awarded the honorary title of "People's Artist of the Russian Federation" for their great contribution to the development of Russian culture and art, as well as for their many years of fruitful activity.

— At the age of five, I stood on a stool, sang a song, read poetry and declared myself: "People's Artist of the Soviet Union Sasha Oleshko," the latter recalled. — For me, the title of "People's Artist of Russia" is a high honor and responsibility. We work for the people.

Anna Mikhalkova admitted that for her this award is an advance.

— I can say that I will work! — the People's Artist smiled.

"Dear friends! Congratulations on the Artist's Day, which is celebrated in Russia for the first time. It is deeply symbolic that this holiday is timed to coincide with the birthday of Konstantin Sergeyevich Stanislavsky, an outstanding theater director and actor, the creator of the world—famous creative school, a vivid phenomenon in Russian and world culture. Today we honor worthy representatives of the country's artistic community, those who devote themselves and their talent to preserving our unique historical, cultural, and spiritual heritage, developing traditions, asceticism, enlightenment, and selfless service to the people, passed down from generation to generation," Vladimir Putin said.
