The dermatologist named the main mistakes in skin care in winter
Winter is the most vulnerable period for the skin due to cold, wind and dry indoor air, as well as a number of household habits, including avoiding hats and gloves. Ruzilya Kim (Sharafieva), a dermatologist at the Atribeaute clinic, told about this on January 17.
"Among the main mistakes that negatively affect the skin barrier in winter is the habit of cleansing the skin until it squeaks. The skin barrier is a complex system that is easily disrupted by aggressive means and exposure," the specialist explained in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».
According to the doctor, excessive cleansing leads to the flushing of protective lipids, which causes the skin to lose moisture faster, become more sensitive and vulnerable to irritants and allergens. If such a habit may not have consequences in the warmer months, then in winter the risk of damage to the skin barrier increases significantly.
Separately, the dermatologist noted the harm of avoiding hats and gloves. Cold and wind cause vasoconstriction of the skin, which reduces the supply of oxygen and nutrients, slows down the restoration of the barrier and disrupts lipid synthesis. In addition, cold air reduces the moisture content of the stratum corneum, and exposed skin areas are more likely to be micro-damaged. As the doctor noted, people who do not wear gloves often develop irritable contact dermatitis.
Inappropriate seasonal care also negatively affects the skin condition. In winter, the specialist recommended reducing the frequency of use of acids and retinoids, reducing the concentration of active agents, or temporarily taking breaks from their use.
Another common mistake the doctor called exposure to hot and dry indoor air, as well as the habit of taking a hot shower, especially immediately after the street. According to her, this increases the evaporation of moisture from the skin surface, flushes away epidermal lipids and can lead to a chronic violation of the protective barrier.
In addition, the dermatologist drew attention to the fact that emollients should be used not only during exacerbations of dry skin or eczema, but on an ongoing basis. With irregular use, the skin barrier does not have time to fully recover, which increases the risk of repeated inflammation.
The doctor also recommended that during active winter sports, additionally protect the skin with sunscreens with SPF 50+, and in everyday life, maintain a comfortable temperature and humidity, select seasonal care products and regularly use a nourishing cream.
Elena Ilchuk, cosmetologist, founder and chief physician of ELEVANS clinic, said on January 5 that in winter, the skin, even if it is initially in a normal state, becomes drier and more sensitive, as it lacks moisture. Ilchuk recalled that temperature fluctuations also affect the vessels of the face, which narrow in the cold and expand in the heat. This process can cause redness and increased symptoms in people with rosacea, as well as cause inflammation on oily skin.
