Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, told how dogs feel in snowdrifts.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Friday, January 16, he noted that in the cold season, the world of smells for dogs is changing not only because of seasonal scents, but also because of how snow affects the spread and perception of odors.

According to him, low temperatures "freeze" the odor molecules: on the one hand, the trail lasts longer, on the other — the dog has to literally stick his nose into the snow to detect it. In addition, after several snowfalls, odor layers form, and the pet can "read" both fresh information and older tracks, which is almost impossible in summer.

The expert noted that by winter smells, a dog is able to recognize many events — from walks of other animals to traces of fireworks or small rodents. At the same time, he warned that snow in the city can also contain dangerous substances, so it is better to allow a pet to actively study odors in parks or outside the city, writes Moscow 24.

The dog handler also advised using winter for training, hiding treats under the snow, which helps develop the dog's sense of smell and cognitive skills.

Golubev on January 14, in an interview with Izvestia, dispelled the widespread myth that wool always reliably protects an animal from the cold. He named the symptoms of frostbite in the pet. At the initial stage of hypothermia, the dog begins to tremble, it tucks its paws, and the ears and pads of its paws get cold. In the second stage, the tremor disappears, movements become stiff, lethargy and shallow breathing appear. The most severe stage is accompanied by loss of consciousness, rare breathing, and a high risk of cardiac arrest.

Earlier, Vladimir Urazhevsky, president of the Union of Cynological Organizations of Russia, said that dogs positively perceive fresh snow in terms of emotions. He advised owners of smooth-haired and miniature dogs to keep their pets warm during long walks. To protect the paws, he recommends using special creams or shoes, and with a large number of reagents on the sidewalks, if the size of the dog allows, pick it up, notes 360.ru .
