An auto expert warned about the risks of parking a car for a long time in a snowdrift
A car left in a snowdrift runs the risk of hidden damage and accelerated wear of components due to exposure to reagents, temperature fluctuations and prolonged parking. Alexander Kornev, head of the Department for Work with Importers at Gazprombank Autoleasing, told Izvestia on January 16.
"The snow coat preserves reagents well, which gradually destroy the exposed metal. Constant temperature spikes "through zero" accelerate corrosion, especially in hard-to-reach places with constant humidity. The iron at the arches, on the thresholds and edges of the doors, in the area of the seals and under the plastic is the first to be delivered," the expert explained.
Prolonged parking also has a negative effect on the battery: batteries lose their charge, and worn ones can completely discharge. Corrosion often affects the terminals, which leads to problems with contact and undercharging.
The condition of the braking system is also dangerous, Kornev added. First, the discs are covered with a surface rusty coating, which can eventually develop into deep corrosion. Due to the souring of the guides, the pads lose their mobility, and the discs can "lead", which worsens braking and causes beating when decelerating. Similar processes affect the suspension elements, reducing the handling of the car.
The expert recommends leaving the car under the roof whenever possible. If this is not possible, it is important to regularly clean the car of snow, even if there is no travel.
"A loose layer is easier to remove than a frozen crust. Park your car away from busy roads for long periods of time so that it collects less dirt and reagents. Choose places where it will not interfere with the passage. Try to warm up the car at least once every two weeks to charge the battery and "revitalize" the working fluids," advises Kornev.
Earlier, on December 4, Kornev told Izvestia how to properly wash a car in winter so as not to harm it. Make it a rule to visit the car wash once a week or two, but at least. Neglected stalactites made of chemicals and sand are more difficult to wash out of hard-to-reach places, especially since they actively spoil the body all this time.
