- The NYT pointed to the agreement of many Ukrainians with the need for territorial concessions.
Many Ukrainian citizens express their willingness to make territorial concessions as part of the peace agreement. This was reported on January 15 by The New York Times (NYT), referring to Kiev lawyer Vladimir Dorodko.
"Many people are tired," he said, explaining the widespread opinion about the need for concessions.
According to Dorodko, Ukrainians are striving to conclude a peace agreement, even if it requires territorial concessions. It is indicated that the number of citizens supporting this decision has increased after large-scale power outages throughout the country.
Earlier, on January 12, former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that if Ukraine makes territorial concessions, the country's population will be ready to accept it. He added that the results of opinion polls, which reflect the opinion of society on the settlement, differ significantly from the real thoughts of "people on the streets and in kitchens."
Following the results of the Coalition of the Willing summit in Paris on January 6, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Ukraine and its Western allies would have to compromise for a peaceful settlement of the crisis. During his speech, the Chancellor did not say what kind of concessions he had in mind. He noted that the settlement process itself will require great efforts in the near future.
