Information about the asteroid with the temporary designation CE2XZW2, which was allegedly supposed to collide with Earth in the coming days, was actively disseminated through Telegram channels and a number of media outlets, causing concern among the public. However, as explained by Honorary Doctor of Sciences, lecturer Sergey Chumakov, this news turned out to be a false alarm based on premature and unverified conclusions.

According to the expert, during routine observations of near-Earth space, unavoidable data processing errors sometimes occur. The asteroid CE2XZW2, which appeared in the initial reports, was removed from the lists as a non-existent object upon re-checking the observations.

Chumakov stressed that such practice is an integral part of the scientific process.: Any preliminary discoveries must be repeatedly rechecked, and only after obtaining reliable evidence can the information be officially made public outside the expert community.

"Unfortunately, the authors of some near—scientific channels and resources jumped to conclusions based on raw information from scientists, as a result, unreliable messages get into the information field, causing unjustified panic," the specialist said.

Chumakov assured that no asteroid the size of a multi-storey building is currently threatening the Earth, and the CE2XZW2 incident clearly demonstrates the importance of a responsible approach to interpreting scientific data.

Earlier, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI RAS stated that the information spreading on the Web about the expected fall of the asteroid CE2XZW2 to Earth in the near future is not true.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
