Senators Lisa Murkowski from the Republican Party and Jeanne Shaheen from the Democratic Party of the United States have introduced a bill prohibiting the United States from annexing territories of NATO member countries, amid statements by American President Donald Trump about Greenland. This was announced on January 13 on Murkowski's official website.

"Today, US Senators Lisa Murkowski and Gene Shaheen introduced the NATO Unity Protection Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at prohibiting the use of funds from the US Department of Defense or the US Department of State to blockade, occupy, annex or otherwise establish control over the sovereign territory of a NATO member state without the consent of the relevant ally or without the sanction of the Alliance," — the statement says.

The draft also states that this bill does not provide for limiting the US military force when necessary to defend itself or its allies.

On January 12, the press service of Republican Congressman from the United States Randy Fine reported that a bill "on the annexation and statehood of Greenland" had been introduced. It was clarified that the law on the annexation and status of Greenland as a state gives Trump the authority to take all necessary actions to annex or acquire the island as a US territory.
