- Kallas pointed to the deterioration of relations between the United States and the EU.
Relations between the United States and the European Union (EU) are "not so good," there are moments of conflicting interests. This was stated by the head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, at a joint press conference with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on January 13.
"I would like to touch upon the state of transatlantic relations, which has been frequently discussed recently. The United States is an indispensable ally, but it is also obvious that our relations are not as good as we would like, there are moments of open disagreement," Callas said.
She also stressed that the European Union cannot abandon 80 years of cooperation with the American side because of the potential loss of benefits.
On January 4, the head of the White House, Donald Trump, said that it would be beneficial for the European Union from the point of view of defense if the United States owned Greenland. On the same day, Greenland's prime minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen indicated that he considered Washington's "repetitive rhetoric" disrespectful and unacceptable. At the same time, on January 9, the American leader noted that NATO would not exist if he were not president.
European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius said on January 12 that the US military operation to capture Greenland, if launched, would mean the end for the North Atlantic Alliance.
The press service of Republican Congressman from the United States Randy Fine reported on January 12 that a bill "on the annexation and statehood of Greenland" had been introduced. It was clarified that the law on the annexation and status of Greenland as a state gives the President of the United States the authority to take all necessary actions to annex or acquire Greenland as a US territory.
