The expert explained the danger of parking the car under the snow for a long time

Prolonged parking in the snow in the yard can cause serious problems for the car. Snow poses risks to the body, engine, electronics and other systems, Nikita Rodionov, technical director of the international franchise network of car service Fit Service, said on January 13.

"Snow, compacting with temperature changes from -20 degrees to thaws, turns into heavy flooring. This pressure causes microcracks in the paintwork. <...> Snow mixed with road salt and sand melts when it warms, and freezes when the temperature drops. Such melting snow —moisture—ice cycles create ideal conditions for corrosion," Rossiyskaya Gazeta quotes the expert as saying.

The specialist noted that snow clogs the fenders and vents, trapping moisture at the wheel arches, where corrosion affects the spars and stiffeners. All locks are blocked by ice in the larvae, and water penetrates through the seals, freezing and expanding. Handles and seals lose elasticity and crack at temperatures below -15°C. Antennas, wipers and headlights are covered with plaque, reducing aerodynamics and visibility.

In addition, as the expert pointed out, when parked outside for a long time in the cold season, condensate in the engine can settle in the cylinders and intake manifold, mixing with oil into an emulsion. Water crystallizes in the fuel tank, blocking the injectors and filters, and the oil in the gearbox and distributor stagnates, and the battery self-discharges. Finally, in the cabin, moisture condenses on the windows and upholstery, causing mold and corrosion.
