What happened

On January 13, the website of the city clinical hospital No. 1 named after G.P. Kurbatov reported that admission to the obstetric hospital was suspended for sanitary and epidemiological reasons. The facility is currently under quarantine. The hospital clarified that there is no shortage of staff in the hospital. The opening date will be announced later.

On the same day, a number of media outlets, including RIA Novosti and TASS, reported that at least nine babies had died in the hospital during the New Year holidays. Information about the deaths of newborns was also confirmed by the Minister of Health of Kuzbass, Andrei Tarasov.

In connection with the incident, the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Kemerovo region opened a criminal case under Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (causing death by negligence to two or more persons). The supervisory authority, together with specialists from Rospotrebnadzor and Roszdravnadzor, checks the institution's compliance with the requirements of legislation on healthcare, protection of the rights of minors and compliance with sanitary and epidemiological norms and requirements in the maternity hospital.

The regional prosecutor's office also organized an inspection. The Agency has put under control the results of a procedural check organized on the basis of information published in the media by the investigative authorities.

The governor of Kuzbass, Ilya Seredyuk, temporarily dismissed the head physician of the hospital, Vitaly Heraskov.
