The first Winter Olympic Games in 90 years, which may take place in Switzerland, may take place in the resort of Crans-Montana, where a fire recently broke out in the bar Le Constellation, which claimed the lives of 40 people. This was reported on January 12 by The Independent newspaper.

"The Swiss Olympic Committee has announced the start of a "privileged dialogue" with the International Olympic Committee regarding the bid to host the Games. The proposal provides for a "decentralized" approach in which events will be held in different regions of Switzerland," the article says.

It is specified that Crans-Montana, where the tragedy occurred on December 31, was selected as one of the venues for alpine skiing competitions.

The explosion and fire in the Le Constellation bar occurred on January 1. According to law enforcement officials, the incident, which resulted in about 40 deaths and 119 injuries, does not qualify as a terrorist act. Those who died in the event of a fire due to a firecracker thrown into the suspended ceiling were trapped in the basement hall where the event was taking place. The next day, the police prepared lists of 113 of the 119 identified victims, including no Russian citizens.

Samuel Rapp, an eyewitness to the tragedy, said that a powerful explosion in a bar on New Year's Eve caused panic and stampede. Swiss President Guy Parmelin said the incident was one of the worst tragedies in the country's history.
