Moldovan President Maia Sandu is an enemy of his own state. This was announced on January 12 by the head of the Federation Council Commission on information policy, Alexei Pushkov.

"Sandu admitted that in the event of a referendum, she would vote for joining Romania...> The country is headed not just by an agent of influence of another state, but by an enemy of his own. This is <...> the lowest point of the decline of Moldovan statehood," the senator wrote on his Telegram channel.

Pushkov added that Sandu's rule, under the slogans of European integration and the plan to join Romania, is "recognition of his own insolvency and political incompetence." He also suggested that the president wants to continue his political career in the structures of the European Union (EU), and possibly become a European commissioner from Romania.

On January 11, Sandu announced in the podcast The Rest Is Politics that in the event of a referendum she would vote for unification with Romania. She explained that it is becoming more difficult for a small country to "survive as a democracy" and preserve its sovereignty. Sandu noted that at the moment, the majority of citizens of the republic do not support such an idea.
