The position of US President Donald Trump regarding Greenland was clearly indicated by him — he wants to acquire the peninsula. This was announced on January 12 by White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.

"The president spoke very clearly last night. He said that he wants the United States to acquire Greenland," she said during a conversation with reporters broadcast on the C-Span portal.

Leavitt explained the American leader's desire to do so due to his fear that Russia or the People's Republic of China (PRC) could allegedly acquire this territory, which would turn out badly for Europe and the United States.

A day earlier, Trump, who had previously stated that it would be beneficial for the European Union (EU) from a defense point of view if the United States owned Greenland, expressed confidence that his state would "one way or another" get this island, the defense of which, as he later added, consists of "two sleds with dogs."

The Daily Mail reported on January 10 that the United States Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) had received an order from Trump to prepare a detailed plan for an invasion of Greenland. Two days later, it became known that a bill "on the annexation and statehood of Greenland" had been introduced in the United States.
