The psychotherapist pointed out the deadly danger of drinking alcohol in a sauna
Drinking alcohol in a sauna can be deadly. On January 11, Olesya Prishchepa, a psychotherapist, psychiatrist and narcologist at the National Research Medical Center for Therapy and Preventive Medicine of the Russian Ministry of Health, told Izvestia.
"In a sauna, in conditions of oxygen deficiency and high temperatures, dehydration increases, blood pressure rises, pulse rate increases, intoxication from alcohol breakdown products increases, which in turn increases the risk of thrombosis, cardiac arrhythmias, heart attacks and strokes," Prishchepa said.
According to her, dehydration from alcohol consumption can also lead to overheating of the body. The therapist added that alcohol usually increases appetite, and it is usually accompanied by fatty, smoked or salty snacks. In addition, under the influence of alcohol, the feeling of fear decreases, concentration and critical assessment of the surrounding reality deteriorate, and coordination of movements is disrupted, which can lead to falls and injuries.
The expert stressed that drinking alcoholic beverages in a sauna is especially dangerous for people who are over 65 years old, as well as those with chronic diseases, problems with the heart, joints and urinary system.
"It is necessary to observe the drinking regime before, during and after visiting the bath, using water, teas, and eating easily digestible foods, fruits, and vegetables. Approach your rest consciously," Prishchepa concluded.
At the end of December 2025, psychiatrist-narcologist Vitaly Holdin noted that celebrating the New Year without alcohol has its advantages. According to him, abstaining from alcohol allows you to really feel the atmosphere of the holiday and keep feeling good without unpleasant consequences the next day.
