Snowfall in Moscow has become the heaviest in the last 56 years
The snowfall in Moscow on January 9 broke a half-century record, becoming the most intense in the last 56 years. This was announced on January 10 by Evgeny Tishkovets, a leading specialist at the Phobos Weather Center.
"On January 9, the record of 1976 was broken, when 12.9 mm of precipitation was recorded in the metropolis. Literally 1 mm was not enough to repeat the daily record for the whole of January, which has been held since 1970. In other words, there has not been such a snowy armageddon in Moscow in the middle of winter for the last 56 years!" he wrote on his Telegram channel.
According to the forecaster, 22 mm of precipitation fell into the precipitation meter at the VDNKh weather station during the day, which was 42% of the monthly norm.
Tishkovets also said that the average increase in snow cover in the capital was 23 cm, and in the Moscow region, record figures were recorded in Kolomna, Mozhaisk and Dolgoprudny, where up to 33 mm of precipitation fell (62% of the January norm). On Saturday and Sunday, January 10 and 11, respectively, light snow is expected and temperatures will drop to -4...-7 degrees during the day and to -11 at night.
From Monday, January 12, a new cyclone will arrive in Central Russia from the south, which will bring up to 7 mm of precipitation, and severe frosts will begin in the second half of the week, the forecaster concluded.
Earlier in the day, the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia reported that in Moscow, on January 9, a record amount of precipitation fell in the entire history of weather observations in the city. It is noted that the total amount of precipitation that has fallen in the capital since the beginning of the year already exceeds 35 mm, which was 67% of the precipitation norm.
Yesterday it was reported that due to heavy snowfall caused by Cyclone Frances, traffic on some sections of the MKAD was almost paralyzed. Motorists spent several hours in traffic jams, and some cars got stuck in the snow.
In addition, adverse weather conditions led to disruptions at the capital's airports, where 28 flights were canceled and more than 50 were delayed, while no mass gatherings of passengers were recorded at the terminals, and airlines provided them with food and accommodation during long delays.
