Kyodo announced the refusal of China from new supplies of rare earths to Japan
A number of Chinese state-owned companies have notified their Japanese partners of their intention to terminate new contracts for the supply of rare earths. The possibility of termination of existing agreements is also being considered. This was reported on January 10 by the Kyodo news agency, citing sources in Beijing and Shanghai.
It is noted that since January 6, China has imposed an embargo on the export of dual-use goods to Japan "for military purposes and for any other purposes that contribute to strengthening military power," as previously stated by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China. At the same time, it has not yet been clarified which types of products are subject to these restrictions.
Information about the termination of supplies of rare earth elements has appeared for the first time. According to the agency, such a move could seriously affect the Japanese industry, which is heavily dependent on imports of these products from China.
Earlier, on December 31, 2025, Bloomberg reported that a group of CEOs of Japanese companies postponed their annual visit to China for the first time in 13 years, indicating political tensions between Tokyo and Beijing over Taiwan. The article noted that the meetings have been held annually since 1975, with the exception of 2012 and the Covid-19 pandemic.
