- Greenland called on the United States to stop the "disrespectful attitude" towards the island
The leaders of Greenland's five political parties in parliament on January 10 demanded that the United States treat the island with respect after statements by American President Donald Trump about a possible military seizure of the Danish autonomous territory.
The appeal was delivered by Jens Frederik Nielsen (Democrats), Pele Broberg (Lighthouse), Mute Egede (People's Community), Alexa Hammond (Forward) and Akkalu Yerimiassen (Solidarity). They called for an end to Washington's "disdainful attitude" towards the island.
"We don't want to be Americans, we don't want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders," the France24 TV channel quotes a fragment of the statement.
The parliamentarians added that the future of Greenland should be decided by the inhabitants of the island themselves.
Earlier in the day, Trump said that the United States wants to own Greenland by any means, while renting the island is not enough. We are also not talking about buying a territory. According to Trump, he would prefer to make a deal one way or another.
On January 8, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance called on the European Union (EU) countries to seriously listen to the statements of the head of the White House about Greenland. According to him, this area is "really important" not only for the missile defense of the United States, but also for the missile defense of the whole world.
Trump said last Sunday, January 4, that the EU would benefit more if Greenland were owned by the United States. He called this region strategically important and stressed that it is necessary for the national security of his country. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called this rhetoric disrespectful and unacceptable.
