Representatives of NATO countries have begun working on the issue of strengthening their presence in the Arctic after the alliance began receiving threats from US President Donald Trump about the possible seizure of this geographical area. This was reported by Politico newspaper on Thursday evening, January 8, citing informed diplomatic sources.

"NATO countries have asked the alliance to strengthen its presence in the Arctic after the United States increased threats to seize Greenland...> The organization must strengthen its Arctic flank. <...> Europe is in a hurry to calm Trump's latest threats and avoid military intervention," the article says.

This issue, as the interlocutors of the publication clarified, was raised on January 8 at a closed-door meeting of NATO leaders, which was held in Brussels. The meeting participants decided to increase their intelligence capabilities in the Arctic, and also discussed increasing defense spending. They also considered the possibility of deploying their military personnel there and conducting military exercises in the area.

It is emphasized that the atmosphere at the meeting, where 32 representatives of the alliance gathered at that moment, was "productive" and "constructive."

Trump said last Sunday, January 4, that it would be more profitable for the European Union (EU) if Greenland were owned by the United States. He called this region strategically important and stressed that it is necessary for the national security of his country. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called this rhetoric disrespectful and unacceptable.

On January 8, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance called on EU countries to seriously listen to the statements of the head of the White House about Greenland. According to him, this area is "really important" not only for America's missile defense, but also for the missile defense of the whole world.
