US President Donald Trump is currently discussing with his national security team a plan for a possible purchase of Greenland. This was announced on January 7 at a press briefing by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.

"This is (the purchase of Greenland. This is something that is currently being actively discussed by the president and his national security team. <...> I know that previous presidents and leaders often ruled out certain options in advance. <...> But I want to emphasize that his first option has always been and remains diplomacy," Leavitt said..

The spokeswoman noted that the idea of acquiring Greenland is not new — it has been discussed by American leaders since the 19th century as beneficial to national security. According to Leavitt, Trump considers curbing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic a priority for the United States.

When asked about the possibility of a military takeover, she replied that the current president does not rule out any of the options in advance, assessing the interests of the country, but his first choice has always been diplomacy.

On the same day, former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin stressed that if the United States captured Greenland, NATO leaders would have to admit a malfunction in the alliance. He also pointed to the right of NATO to say "no" to the policy of US President Donald Trump.

On January 4, Trump said that it would be beneficial for the European Union (EU) from the point of view of defense if the United States owned Greenland. The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, indicated on the same day that he considered the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.

On January 6, the leaders of Denmark, Poland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom in a joint statement indicated that only Denmark and Greenland should make decisions about the future fate of their territories. Later, the Reuters news agency reported that the Trump team had begun discussing options for acquiring the island.
