Russia demands that the United States treat the Russian sailors aboard the hijacked Marinera tanker with humanity and dignity. This was reported on January 7 to Izvestia in the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"Taking into account the information received about the presence of Russian citizens among the crew, we demand that the American side ensure humane and decent treatment for them, strictly observe their rights and interests, and not hinder their speedy return to their homeland," the statement said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also said it was closely monitoring reports of the landing of the US military on the Marinera ship in the North Atlantic.

On the same day, the Reuters news agency reported that the United States had launched an operation to seize the Marinera oil tanker. It was clarified that the operation is being carried out by the Coast Guard and the US armed forces.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on January 6 that the Russian Federation is monitoring the situation with the Marinera oil tanker, which is being pursued by the US and NATO militaries in the international waters of the North Atlantic. The diplomats stressed that the tanker was flying the Russian Federation's national flag in full compliance with international maritime law.

Later, the Russian Ministry of Transport confirmed that the US Navy had boarded the Marinera oil tanker. It was clarified that communication with the ship was lost. The Ministry of Transport stressed that the regime of freedom of navigation operates on the high seas, and no state has the right to use force against ships registered in another jurisdiction.
