Nostalgia for childhood has become one of the main leitmotifs of this New Year's weekend. Hundreds of thousands of viewers across the country came to cinemas, wanting to see the new film "Pinocchio". This is a modern interpretation of a fairy tale that everyone knows.

The adventures of the animated wooden doll were once again embodied on the screen. And those who have already watched the picture note that attention is drawn to the plot twists, vivid images, special effects and fascinating acting.

"The relationship between parents and their child is lost in the film, that they need to be loved for who they are," Arina, a viewer from Vladivostok, shared.

Judging by the numerous audience reviews, the relationship between Papa Carlo and Pinocchio plays a special role in the film.

"After the magic particles have sunk into the log, our Papa Carlo goes through all the necessary steps in order to probably become a better person," said director Igor Voloshin.

Papa Carlo is played by Alexander Yatsenko. Pinocchio was created using the latest computer technology. It creaks, blinks, smiles — in short, it was created with great love.

"Pinocchio dreams of growing up and learning as quickly as possible. He buys the alphabet. But the curiosity of the main character and, of course, his restlessness lead to the most unexpected adventures," said film critic Nikolai Nikulin.

The audience celebrates the costumes and decorations. The action takes place in a small Italian town, which was specially built in the Moscow region. There is a school, a bookstore, a vegetable store, a theater, and Papa Carlo's workshop on the set.

"It's 100% made for cinema. But it is made so that you can even visit it now. And I think it will be possible for children and parents to visit for a long time to see the Italian city where Pinocchio takes place," said actor and producer Fyodor Bondarchuk.

Acting is also on a special account. The emphasis is on realism. Ruzil Minekaev and Anastasia Talyzina do not play dolls, but live actors of the theater — Harlequin and Malvina. Victoria Isakova and Alexander Petrov are not the fox and the cat, but the cunning crooks Alice and Basilio.

"I think this is the next stage in the development of our cinema. Fairy tales are getting a little more inventive. In terms of semantic loads, it's a little more serious. At the same time, the picture is just as bright and cheerful," said actor Alexander Petrov.

And of course, the audience celebrates the good old songs and music of Alexei Rybnikov, who took part in the work on the new film.

"I remember all the scenes with the songs, because I wanted to get up and dance and sing along," said Elena from Yekaterinburg.

The fabulous film "Pinocchio" has collected more than 1 billion rubles in the first four days of distribution in Russia. The film directed by Igor Voloshin was released on January 1, 2026. According to the Cinema Fund system, it was watched by over 1.8 million viewers. It is also known that the pre-sale of tickets for the film amounted to more than 185 million rubles. On the first day of rental, the film collected over 226 million rubles.

The film was released right on the occasion of the half-century anniversary of the premiere of the Soviet film, and there is no way to resist comparisons. The interest of the audience turned out to be so high that cinemas have to introduce additional sessions.
