Negotiations between Syria and Israel on a new security agreement will be held in Paris, they were initiated by the American side. This was reported on January 4 by the Axios portal, citing sources familiar with the situation.

"Senior Syrian and Israeli officials will meet on Monday (January 5. - Ed.) in Paris to resume negotiations on a new security agreement," the publication says.

It is specified that this is the fifth round of negotiations and the first in the past two months. The meetings are expected to last for five days. Tom Barrack, US President Donald Trump's special envoy for Syria, and Syrian Foreign Minister Asad Hassan al-Shaibani will take part in them.

According to the portal, the purpose of the negotiations is to conclude a security pact that includes the demilitarization of southern Syria and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the occupied areas of Syria.

After the change of power in the Syrian Republic, the Israeli army deployed forces along the border in December 2024, ostensibly to ensure the safety of Israelis and communities in the Golan Heights and took control of the Hermon mountain range. In addition, the Israeli military has attacked Syrian targets several times.

On November 28, 2025, the Israeli Armed Forces launched an airstrike on the settlement of Beit Jan. As a result of the bombing, nine people were killed. The Syrian Foreign Ministry called the shelling of the village deliberate and blamed it on the Israeli side.
