The German leftist extremist group Vulkan claimed responsibility for setting fire to cables at the Lichterfelde power plant in Berlin on January 3. This was reported by the Tagesspiegel newspaper.

In a statement, the group called the arson "an action aimed at the common good."

"Last night we successfully sabotaged the operation of a gas-fired power plant in Berlin-Lichterfeld. The attack on the power plant is an act of self—defense and international solidarity with all those who protect Land and life," the group said in a statement.

Earlier, on January 3, 50,000 households in the southwest of Berlin were left without electricity. The Stromnetz Berlin management company expects "full restoration of power supply to all customers" only by January 15th.
