The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States could have a source in the Venezuelan government. This was reported on January 3 by Reuters, citing sources familiar with the operation.

According to the agency, the source could assist the US military in tracking down the location of the Venezuelan leader.

According to the sources of The New York Times newspaper, American intelligence also monitored Maduro using drones. The capture itself could have been in preparation for several months.

On the same day, the American president announced that the United States had successfully launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela. According to Trump, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were captured and taken out of the country. He added that the US military took Maduro and his wife out after they were captured by helicopter, after which they landed on a ship.

The Venezuelan authorities have declared a state of emergency on the territory of the state due to the American strikes. The country has also requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern and condemnation after the US military operation in Venezuela. Russia also reaffirmed its solidarity with the Venezuelan people and the leadership of the state and called for preventing further escalation of tension between the two countries.

In a telephone conversation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez spoke in favor of preventing further escalation around Venezuela and resolving the situation through dialogue.
