- Kovalchuk noted the leadership of the Russian Federation in the development of advanced nuclear energy
Russia is a world leader in the introduction of advanced fast neutron nuclear reactors. This was stated on January 3 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in an interview with TASS.
"Russia is ahead of the rest of the planet here. The USSR built some of the world's first fast reactors, the BN-350 and BN-600. BN-800 is operating in Russia, the only large closed—cycle fast neutron power unit in the world," he said.
According to the president of the Kurchatov Institute, the United States and Europe refused to develop the topic of fast reactors, without solving a number of technical problems.
"And we've been solving them consistently since the 1950s and eventually proved that the technology works. It's not without difficulties, of course, but it works," Kovalchuk stressed.
The corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences added that a unique energy complex is currently being built in Siberia, in the city of Seversk. It includes a new generation BREST-OD-300 reactor with a lead coolant, as well as a fuel reprocessing module located next to it.
"This will allow us to work out a completely closed cycle on the scale of a separate energy district. This project is part of the national project "New Nuclear Technologies", aimed at Russia's technological leadership and the transition to two—component nuclear energy. The Kurchatov Institute is its main scientific organization," Kovalchuk said.
In November, Russian President Vladimir Putin named the Russian state corporation Rosatom a recognized leader in the field of nuclear energy. The Head of State stressed that when constructing the stations, the state corporation uses advanced engineering solutions, while not forgetting about environmental regulations.
