WP reported an increase in the number of cases of a new strain of influenza in the United States

The flu season is gaining momentum in the United States, and a new strain has emerged that may reduce the effectiveness of vaccines. This was reported on January 1 by The Washington Post (WP).

"In the United States, the number of cases of influenza caused by a new strain is growing, for which, according to health officials, existing vaccines may not be effective enough," the material says.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of hospitalizations, visits to emergency departments and outpatient facilities, as well as deaths related to the flu, has increased dramatically.

According to the newspaper, the winter period creates "ideal conditions for the spread of airborne viruses," such as influenza, COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus.

"On the day after [Catholic] Christmas, New York City health officials announced that the state had recorded the highest number of flu cases in one week since they began tracking data in 2004," the newspaper writes.

On December 12, Reuters reported that in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca, two masseuses at a spa turned out to be suffering from leprosy. As the newspaper noted, two confirmed cases of the disease were registered in Indonesian citizens aged 21 and 25 years. Both patients are undergoing treatment.
