- In his New Year's address, Macron promised to "defend Ukraine" after peace is achieved.
Representatives of all European countries and their allies will make a firm commitment to defend Ukraine after the conclusion of any peace treaty. This was announced on Wednesday, December 31, by French President Emmanuel Macron in his New Year's address to the nation.
In the video, which was posted on the French leader's page on the social network X (ex. Twitter), he said that this promise would be made by representatives of European capitals next Tuesday, January 6. On this day, as Macron explained, they will all gather in Paris, where they will confirm their intention to defend Kiev after concluding any peace agreement with Russia.
In addition, Macron, speaking about his activities as president, added that he was not going to leave ahead of schedule, and recalled that his term of office would expire in 2027. However, as the French leader stressed, he does not plan to nominate his candidacy for future elections, but will try to do "everything possible" to ensure that this event takes place "without any foreign interference."
On December 29, Macron, announcing a meeting of the "coalition of the willing" at the beginning of next month, said that he, along with other European leaders, as well as with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, was striving for progress on security guarantees for Kiev in order to establish peace.
