During negotiations with the US delegation in Riyadh on March 11, Ukrainian officials for the first time allowed the possibility of abandoning 20% of the territories. This was reported on December 30 by The New York Times (NYT).

"For the first time, [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky said through his people that he was ready to give 20% of his country for the sake of achieving peace," the newspaper quoted an unnamed American official as saying.

It is noted that during the meeting, Rustem Umerov, who held the post of Minister of Defense of Ukraine at that time, marked the borders acceptable to Kiev on the map with a marker.

Before that, on December 14, it became known that Zelensky allowed the possibility of the country's refusal to join NATO as a compromise.

On December 11, the Public television channel reported that Zelensky had not ruled out holding an "all-Ukrainian referendum" on the issue of territories. According to the TV channel, he said that the citizens of Ukraine should express their opinion on the issue of Ukraine leaving the controlled part of Donbass.

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, responding to a question about Zelensky's proposed idea to hold a referendum to determine the affiliation of Donbass, said that all of Donbass is Russian. He recalled that the affiliation of Donbass is spelled out in the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
