The number of people injured in a head-on collision between two trains plying the tourist route leading to the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu has increased to 40. This was reported on December 30 by the Spanish newspaper El Economista, citing government officials.

"At least one person was killed and 40 injured <...> after a head-on collision between two tourist trains en route to Machu Picchu in southeastern Peru," the report said.

It is clarified that representatives of the provincial prosecutor's office of the city of Cuzco decided to continue working to establish all the details of the incident.

The collision of the two trains was reported on the same day by the newspaper La República (LR). At that time, it was known about one dead person, who turned out to be 61-year-old machinist Roberto Cardenas Loiza, and 30 injured. There were 54 people on the train in total, and the incident itself was recorded at the 82nd kilometer of the Pampacachua sector in the Ollantaytambo district, Urubamba province.
