A head-on collision between two trains plying the tourist route leading to the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu killed one person and injured 30 others. This was reported on December 30 by the newspaper La República (LR), citing government officials.
"A head-on collision between two trains heading to Machu Picchu claimed the life of one driver and injured at least 30 people. <...> Victims are being sent to clinics in the imperial capital," the article says.
It is reported that the identity of the deceased has been established — he turned out to be 61-year-old Roberto Cardenas Loiza. There were 54 people on the train, 30 of whom were injured in various degrees of severity. Some of them may be redirected to the city of Cuzco, which is located two hours from the accident site, the causes of which are still being determined.
The incident occurred at the 82nd kilometer of the Pampacachua sector in Ollantaytambo district, Urubamba province. As General Julio Becerra clarified in an interview with the publication, special forces were sent to the scene of the tragedy, as well as 12 ambulances.
On December 27, Diario de Centro América magazine reported 15 dead and 19 injured in a bus accident on the Inter-American Highway in Guatemala. The death toll, as specified, in addition to 11 men and three women, included a child. 10 rescue units were also sent to the scene.
