In Poland, farmers organized mass protests against the signing of a trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the South American Mercosur common Market. This was announced on December 30 by TVP Info channel.

"The demonstrations are intended to express disagreement with the planned free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur," the publication says.

The protests began on December 30 at 10:00 a.m. local time (12:00 a.m. Moscow time). Farmers drove tractors onto national roads, highways and overpasses in more than 170 locations across Poland. According to the TV channel, the protesters said they would not block the roads, but there were reports of temporary closures in some areas.

The organizers of the strike claim that these actions are aimed at slowing down traffic, rather than completely blocking it, adding that the purpose of the protests is to demonstrate disagreement with the trade deal.

In addition, the protesters believe that the agreement with Mercosur will harm Polish agricultural producers and consumers, as in Latin American countries the quality requirements are much less strict than in the European Union.

On December 20, Bloomberg reported that the EU had once again failed to sign a trade agreement with Mercosur. According to Agatha Demare, a senior researcher at the European Council on Foreign Relations, failure to enter into a partnership with Mercosur "would be a huge mistake for Europe's ambitions to take a significant place on the global economic stage."
