The rector of the Pushkin Institute spoke about the most popular words in 2025
The nouns "neural network", "AI" (artificial intelligence), "industrial", "algorithms", "technologies" and "data" became the most popular in 2025. Nikita Gusev, rector of the Pushkin Institute of the Russian Language, announced this on December 30.
"Among nouns, three categories of words come to the fore. First of all, these are units related to the information sector: neural network, AI, industrial technology, algorithms, technologies, data. These words are gradually moving from professional jargon into everyday speech," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Gusev noted that words related to the socio-political and cultural agenda also occupy a significant place. Among them are "Intervision", "negotiations", "summit", "Alaska", "diplomacy", which reflect current events and changes in the world.
The rector also pointed to the growing use of the words "domestic" and "national", which, in his opinion, indicates an increasing emphasis on the national, cultural and technological sovereignty of Russia.
Gusev singled out the verb "generate" separately, whose meaning and scope have expanded significantly. Previously used mainly in technical and scientific contexts, today it describes the work of neural networks that generate text, images, music, code, and other types of content. The slang form "generate" shows the routine and ordinariness of this process.
The press service of the "Read the City" book network project reported on December 6 that, following the results of a popular vote, the main words of 2025 were chosen, they were "anxiety", artificial intelligence (AI) and "okak". It is noted that other contenders for the victory were the words "faith", "kringe", "love", "change".
