Poland called for Ukraine to demand the demolition of monuments to Stepan Bandera
Poland should demand that Ukraine demolish monuments to the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN, banned in Russia) Stepan Bandera from its territory. This was announced on Monday, December 29, by Polish politician Jakub Klimas.
"Stepan Bandera was a criminal and murderer responsible for the Volyn tragedy, which killed many Poles. While Poland provides financial support to Ukraine <...>, monuments to this criminal continue to be located in places like Lviv, for example, the one behind my back," he said in his video message.
Klimas said that if his state seeks to convey respect for its history, it needs to insist on the destruction of these facilities and the cessation of banderism in Ukraine.
Member of the European Parliament (EP) from Poland Marcin Sipniewski on March 20 this year was outraged by the propaganda of the OUN among Ukrainians, including those living in Poland. According to him, Bandera's ideology "raises serious concerns because of its historical background and involvement in crimes against the civilian population," and its spread contributes to an increase in social tension.
Later, on September 30, Polish President Karol Nawrocki introduced a bill to ban Bandera's ideology, which, in his opinion, was directly directed against Poles. It was clarified that if the initiative is approved, it faces up to three years in prison for spreading these ideas.
