The thickness of the ice on Lake Arey in Transbaikalia is 54 cm. This was recorded by state inspectors who are monitoring the lake. The snow cover is 13 cm. The data is reported by the press service of the regional Ministry of Natural Resources.

According to the ChitaMedia news agency, it is necessary to monitor the ice condition of the lake, since a thick layer of ice, especially under a layer of snow, prevents sunlight from penetrating. Because of this, underwater plants stop photosynthesis, organic substances at the bottom of the lake decompose, absorb oxygen and release toxic gases. It becomes difficult for fish to breathe, their mass death is not excluded.

The agency notes that at the beginning of winter, when the ice is just beginning to form, its thickness is about 10 cm. Over time, it increases, reaching 180 cm.

Earlier it was reported that a new version of the Red Book of Animals was released in Transbaikalia. The updated edition was presented by the Regional Ministry of Natural Resources. The work on the book was carried out for five years. It contains information about 170 species of animals, which is 35 less than in the previous issue. At the same time, some new species were included in the publication for the first time.
