- The Turkish Foreign Ministry called Israel's recognition of Somaliland interference in the affairs of Somalia
Israel's recognition of Somaliland is an interference in the affairs of Somalia. Ankara strongly condemns such a move. This was announced on December 26 by the official representative of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Onju Keceli.
"Israel's statement recognizing the independence of the Somaliland region is a new example of illegal actions by the Government of [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, aimed at creating instability at the regional and global levels," the diplomat wrote on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Kecheli noted that decisions concerning the future of Somalia should be made taking into account the will of the entire population of the country. He added that Ankara "strongly supports" the territorial integrity of Somalia, and made it clear that Turkey would continue to support the Somali people.
On the same day, Netanyahu announced the recognition of the Republic of Somaliland as an independent state. He noted that the declaration is in line with the spirit of the Abraham Agreements, signed at the initiative of US President Donald Trump. Israel plans to immediately expand its relations with the Somali Republic, Netanyahu added.
In April, The New York Times reported that the unrecognized state of Somaliland in the northern Horn of Africa wants to receive official recognition from Trump. It was noted that in exchange for this, the authorities are ready to provide an airstrip and a port in the controlled territory.
