The Taliban movement's positions in Afghanistan are weakening, so extremist groups in the country feel more at ease. Andrey Serenko, a political scientist and expert on Central Asian countries, stated this in an interview with Izvestia on December 28.

"There are more and more contradictions within the Taliban, while jihadist associations are strengthening. The militants are now on guard after their success in Syria, many would like to go even further, in this sense they are also looking towards Tajikistan," he explains.

The expert adds that the current border skirmishes may be an attempt to test the Tajik security forces and the Tajik authorities.

"I think that next year the pressure on the official Dushanbe will increase. I predict attempts by extremists to carry out operations not only on the border territory, but also inside Tajikistan," he warns.

Earlier, on December 25, it became known that an armed clash had taken place on the Tajik-Afghan border. Three terrorists were killed, and two border guards were also killed. The State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan has called on the Taliban government to take additional security measures.

On December 23, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) denied information in the media that Tajikistan had asked for help in connection with armed attacks from Afghanistan. It was clarified that Dushanbe did not request any support in connection with the events of November 26 and 30, 2025.
