The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office has issued an arrest warrant for 29 people, including 14 football players, during an investigation into illegal betting in Turkish football, TRT Haber TV channel reported on December 26.

The source of the publication reported that the 14 suspected players were betting against their team. Also among the scammers are Erden Timur, the former CEO of Galatasaray football club, and another person who conducted suspicious financial transactions and used a separate account for betting.

"During simultaneous arrest, detention, searches and seizure of evidence conducted in 11 provinces with a center in Istanbul, a total of 29 suspects, including 14 football players, were detained and arrested," the media notes.

On October 31, it was reported that the disciplinary Council of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended 149 referees who were found to be involved in betting on football matches. According to the federation, the punishment ranges from eight to 12 months. The investigation is ongoing against three other judges. It was noted that the inspection had been carried out for about five years.

After that, on November 7, the Istanbul Prosecutor's office issued arrest warrants for 17 football referees and the president of the Turkish Super League club Eyupspor, Murat Ozkai. An internal investigation found that the judges were involved in betting — out of 571 active professional judges, 371 people had their accounts in bookmakers.
