Roscosmos announced plans to create a lunar power plant by 2036

Russia plans to create a lunar power plant by 2036. This was announced on December 24 by the Roscosmos State Corporation.

"In December 2025, Roscosmos signed a state contract with NPO Lavochkin to carry out work until 2036 on the creation of a Russian lunar power plant," the company's Telegram channel said.

The corporation clarified that the main task of the station will be to provide electricity to the future Russian infrastructure on the Earth's satellite, including lunar rovers, scientific observatories and elements of the International Scientific Lunar Station.

In addition to Roscosmos, Rosatom and the Kurchatov Institute are involved in the project. The development and deployment of the power facility is considered as a key stage for the transition from individual research missions to a permanent presence on the Moon.

Oleg Orlov, director of the Institute of Biomedical Problems (IMBP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), said on December 18 that Roscosmos "approved the deployment of the Russian Orbital Station (ROS) as part of the domestic segment of the International Space Station (ISS). He clarified that in the future, after the completion of the ISS project, it will be separated into an independent flight.

Denis Kutovoy, Deputy Director of the Roscosmos Space Systems Department, spoke on Tuesday, December 16, about identifying the most promising point for the creation of a Russian lunar base. According to him, the lunar rover will study the soil on the Earth's natural satellite. Kutovoy clarified that his corporation is working on laying the "experimental foundation" for further goals of human space exploration.

Denis Manturov, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, speaking at the Rossiya National Center, called the creation of a lunar station, which will be based on a nuclear power plant, opening up new prospects for exploring deep space.
