Italian antitrust regulator fined Ryanair for $300 million
Italy's antimonopoly authority has fined Europe's largest airline Ryanair in the amount of €255 million ($300.19 million) for abusing its dominant position in relations with travel agencies. This was reported by Reuters on December 23.
According to the agency, the airline blocked or made it difficult for travel agencies to offer Ryanair flights in combination with the services of other airlines.
"Its dominant position is due not only to its significant market share, which continues to grow, but also to numerous other indicators that contribute to Ryanair's significant market power and ability to operate independently of competitors and consumers," the supervisory authority said in a statement.
The agency said they were outraged by the airline's introduction of facial recognition procedures, blocking payments from online travel agencies, and entering into partnership agreements with travel agents.
On October 27, the West Siberian Transport Prosecutor's Office reported that the Novosibirsk airline S7 Airlines was fined 30,000 rubles for repeated overbooking. It is specified that in August of this year, passengers flying from Sochi to Novosibirsk were refused transportation due to the excess of the number of passengers who checked in for the flight over the number of available seats on the plane.
