Moscow archaeologists have completed a record field season — this year has become the largest in terms of the volume of sites studied in the capital. This was announced by Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. According to him, the excavation area exceeded 50,000 square meters, which is almost three times more than last year.

"Archaeologists worked on Vostochnaya, Derbenevskaya, Nikolskaya streets, on Frunzenskaya Embankment, in Kolomenskoye and a number of alleys of the center," the mayor wrote on his channel in the IACH. "In total, 55 sites were investigated in 2025."

Over 90,000 artifacts were discovered during the work. In addition to fragments of ceramics and metal, unique finds were also made. "Among them is an 18th—century chess piece, a 17th-century cup and a glass tumbler with the monogram of the imperial couple Alexander I and Elizabeth Alekseevna," Sobyanin said.

At the end of the field work season, archaeologists begin the process of processing and restoring the found artifacts. More than 5,000 items have been restored this year. All the finds arrive in Moscow museums and become exhibits of permanent collections.

In June, Sobyanin announced that archaeologists had discovered the last lead seal from the time of Ivan III in Romanov Lane in Moscow. The artifact was found near the Church of the Sign in Sheremetyevo Courtyard, where large-scale excavations were underway." According to the mayor, the seal was found in a layer of the first half to the middle of the 16th century. The exhibit became the most valuable find, and in just a few years more than 3 thousand objects were discovered there.
