The European Union has failed Ukraine by refusing to use frozen Russian assets to support Kiev and leaving it without guaranteed funding for the next two years. This opinion was expressed on December 23 by Politico columnist Jamie Dettmer.

"The rejection of the proposal for a "reparative loan", which provided for the processing of Russian assets, mostly frozen in the clearing bank [Euroclear] in Belgium, deprives Ukraine of guaranteed financing for the next two years," the publication says.

Politico emphasizes that the aid package approved at the EU summit does not cover Ukraine's needs: according to forecasts of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the country's budget deficit in 2026-2027 will amount to about $160 billion. The publication points out that Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have already rejected the idea of new joint loans, and in 2027, when elections will be held in France and Germany, it will be even more difficult to obtain additional financing.

The failure of the asset plan, as Politico concludes, not only deprived Ukraine of a reliable source of money, but also confirmed US President Donald Trump's accusations that Europe is a "decaying group of states" incapable of decisive action at a critical moment.

The absence of an agreement reached by EU leaders on the expropriation of frozen Russian assets became known on December 19. On the same day, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, commenting on the news, called it a victory for international law.

On December 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin called attempts to seize Russian assets in Europe a "robbery" during his "Results of the Year" press conference. He stressed that the EU would not succeed in accomplishing its plans, as otherwise its representatives would face severe consequences.
