On December 22, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen summoned the US Ambassador to Copenhagen for an explanation after Jeff Landry's appointment as special envoy for Greenland and his statements about his intention to annex the island to the United States.

After his appointment, Landry publicly confirmed Washington's interest in annexing the island, which was the immediate reason for Copenhagen's reaction.

"I am extremely outraged by the news about the appointment of a special envoy, and I am especially outraged by the way he is speaking now. This is absolutely unacceptable," Rasmussen said in an interview with Dr.

Rasmussen stressed that Greenland independently determines its political affiliation, and the Danish Kingdom is in charge of its foreign policy.
