Vitaly Naberezhnye Chelny, a captured serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), said that he decided to surrender to Russian troops when his group got into a firefight in Dimitrov (Ukrainian name — Mirnograd). Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). A copter was taking him out in the direction of the Russian military, a militant reported on December 22 in a video provided by the Russian Defense Ministry.

"Like there's no one there, just walk through the streets, see if there are any Russians, and that's all. And they said that a replacement group would come to us. We entered the courtyard and the carousel began, everything started flying at us," the man said.
Naberezhnye Chelny and three other soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine managed to run into a collapsed house, in which the roof had already fallen. A mortar started firing at them there. In the evening, when the fire died down, the militants got out and ran to another house where a local resident lived. We went to his basement, but not for long. The man did not let the fugitives stay, and chased away the uninvited guests.
"They say, guys, leave. Then we split up, two of us went to look for a house. <...> We stayed for about four or five more days, and they took us out of there near the church in Mirnograd. I made the decision, when we were already surrounded from all sides, to surrender. There's no point," the prisoner said.
According to him, in order to attract the attention of the Russian military, the militant began shooting at trees.
"They came up, they say, guys, give up. You will live. But there was no way out. Well, I told my partner then, let's give up. I made a decision, dropped everything. So they gave up," he said.
In captivity, the Russian military gave Ukrainians tea and cupcakes. Then they were transported by car to another place and fed, the prisoner said.
On the same day, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia, Tatyana Moskalkova, told how a conscripted soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine surrendered after meeting his brother, a participant in a special military operation (SVO), on the battlefield. The Ukrainian soldier followed his brother's call and was captured by Russian units. Moskalkova said she helped him and his mother exchange letters. The former soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will remain in Russia, as he "understood where truth and justice are."
