- The EU linked a loan of €90 billion to the purchase of weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Europe
The leaders of the European Union (EU) countries linked the purchase of weapons by Ukraine through a loan of € 90 billion with the purchase of weapons from the countries of the association. This was announced on December 19 by French President Emmanuel Macron following the EU summit.
"We have taken care to introduce a strict European preference for our defense industry and for the Ukrainian one," RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as saying.
The participants of the union's summit agreed on a decision to provide a loan for the purchase of weapons at their own expense. It is noted that Brussels did not support the idea of using Russia's frozen assets to finance Ukraine.
Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia refused to participate in granting Ukraine an interest-free loan worth €90 billion. It is specified that the funds were allocated to Kiev for 2026-2027. This decision was firmly confirmed by 25 representatives of the EU member States.
On the same day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called the EU leaders' granting of an interest-free loan of €90 billion to Ukraine a waste of money.
On December 19, Leonid Slutsky, head of the State Duma's International Affairs Committee, said that the EU's intention to provide financing to Ukraine by any means for the next two years indicates that European politicians are eager to continue the hot phase of the Ukrainian conflict.
