The countries that are part of the European Union (EU) do not intend to ever return Russia's assets. This was announced on December 19 by Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever.

"The European Union has no intention of giving [to Russian President Vladimir] Putin. Putin needs Russian assets," he said after the EU summit.

Accordingly, he responded to the criticism of Brussels, which supported the blocking of Russian assets, but did not advocate their redistribution to Kiev.

The Belgian Prime Minister said on the same day that the potential confiscation of Russian assets could lead to uncontrollable financial and legal risks.

On December 18, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper learned about the plans of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to discuss with Bart De Wever Belgium's refusal to transfer assets to the Russian Federation. The article emphasized that Kiev expresses concern that the Belgian prime minister continues to refuse to provide blocked Russian funds.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, said on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the European Union would have negative consequences. In turn, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov added on December 15 that the situation with frozen Russian assets shows that "theft is in the blood of Europeans."
