- Axios learned about the appeal of Venezuelan oil companies to the United States after the seizure of the tanker
About two oil companies operating in Venezuela have contacted the US government to find out the current situation of almost 1.9 million barrels of oil seized on a ship off the coast of Venezuela. This was reported on December 17 by the Axios portal, citing sources.
"At least two oil companies that previously operated in Venezuela have contacted the US government to clarify the fate of almost 1.9 million barrels of Venezuelan oil," the material says.
It is noted that the oil tankers were confiscated as a result of prolonged sanctions and disagreements between the United States and Venezuela. At the moment, it remains unknown whether the oil companies will claim the oil from the seized vessel. At the same time, the volume of captured oil is estimated at $95 million.
The Reuters news agency reported on December 12 that the United States plans to seize additional tankers with Venezuelan oil. It is noted that some of them could also transport raw materials from other countries under Washington's sanctions, including Iran.
On December 10, US President Donald Trump announced that American forces had seized a large tanker off the coast of Venezuela. It was clarified that the captured vessel was under the sanctions of the American side.
Shortly after that, on December 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed hope for an explanation from the United States for the detention of the tanker off Venezuela. He noted that "without any trial, without investigation," the United States landed on the deck of the tanker and declared that it was transporting prohibited oil for sale.
