Brigitte, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, apologized for insulting feminists, but said that, despite the publicity of her person, she has the right to express her own opinion in private conversations. This was reported by Politico newspaper on December 16.

"I apologize if I offended the women who were victims of [sexual violence] <...> I am the president's wife, but I am also on my own, and in private I can afford inappropriate behavior. People have the right to speak and think freely," the newspaper quoted the first lady of France as saying.

Macron also later insisted that her statements were made in private, and that she would not have uttered those words in public.

The France24 TV channel reported on December 8 that Brigitte Macron had publicly insulted feminists who opposed rape. So, on December 6, a group of activists disrupted the performance of 51-year-old comedian Ari Abittan. In 2021, he was accused of rape, but in 2023, investigators dropped all charges against him due to lack of evidence. The activists reminded Abittan of this story by going to his stand-up show wearing masks with the words "rapist".

Later, on December 7, the first lady of France came to the stand-up performance with her daughter. Then Abittan admitted that "he was scared," probably because the activists might disrupt the second performance. In response to the comedian's concerns, Macron said: "If there are any dirty bitches there, we will kick them out."
