Trump signed a decree recognizing fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction
US President Donald Trump has declared fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction (WMD). This was announced on December 15 on the White House website.
"As President of the United States, my highest duty is to protect the country and its citizens. Accordingly, I hereby designate illegal fentanyl and its main chemicals as weapons of mass destruction," the executive order says.
Trump emphasized the scale of the problem, noting that, according to the administration, from 200 to 300 thousand people die from fentanyl every year.
Trump said in an interview with Politico on December 9 that the United States was considering launching a military operation against drug trafficking from Colombia and Mexico. He stressed that drug trafficking remains one of the main threats to the United States, and the administration is exploring all possible countermeasures, including military ones.
