The leadership of the College of Europe is looking for a new rector after the resignation of former head of European diplomacy Federica Mogherini due to suspicions of misuse of funds. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on December 15.

"The college accepts applications until March 2, and the new rector will assume his duties from June 2026. <...> The rector has overall academic and administrative responsibility for the college as a whole," the vacancy announcement says.

The educational institution is looking for citizens of European countries who possess "important academic qualities", have management experience, and speak English and French.

The authors of the article clarify that the College plans to take a more responsible approach to the selection of candidates, unlike the last time when Mogherini applied for participation in the competition after the completion of the selection period and despite accusations of nepotism and non-compliance with the requirements of this position.

Mogherini's detention in Belgium became known on December 2. On December 3, the European Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) announced that she and two other European officials had been charged with misuse of the association's funds.

The Euractiv portal reported on the same day that the Belgian police were conducting searches at the headquarters of the EU diplomatic service. Mogherini resigned as rector of the College of Europe on December 4 amid a fraud investigation.

In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that the new corruption scandal in the EU is their internal affair. He also stressed that the fight against corruption in Russia is conducted systematically and regularly.
